Longterm review Stoic LysvikSt II tent

My 2024 replacement for my Wechsel Venture 2 tent

Timespan : april to september 2024

November 2023 it was end-of-life for my Wechsel Venture 2 tent 🖱️ . The zipper of the innertent had finished to function. The innertent itself was demolished by a wild cat searching for food. And the flysheet was ripped to pieces by two storms within two days. I decided to order the Stoic LysvikSt II tent.

Verdict october 2024 : End Of Life ...

End of september 2024, so after only about six months, the Stoic LysvikSt II tent was finished by the sun. There suddenly appeared a rip, and then one more. This means time has come since the material has desintegrated and refuses to be taped from then on.

These are some factory-pictures that give you some basic information about this tent.

These are my first pictures of the Stoic LysvikSt II "on the road". I took them at my one but last day of cycling in 2023 and it was the first night I used the tent.

The tent is (truly) freestanding*, so including the vestibules since they have there own (extra) pole. It is the only type of tent I ever bought and will buy. The innertent and the vestibules are very spacious. But the threshold of the innertent is some centimeters more high then usual and needs some getting used to. The poles run in short tunnels which is a plus since their tip might ruin longer tunnels since you then have to force them through. Then you have a very annoying problem (as I have experienced before). And getting poles through long tunnels is a big hassle anyway (as I have also experienced before).

* Freestanding means the tent does not need any pegs nor lines to be fully pitched. Very many people (sellers) say there tent is freestanding where they actually mean the innertent is (which it almost always is). The vestibules of there tents are not freestanding, they need pegs to have there shape. Or the flysheet needs lines to keep it away from the innertent, so to avoid condensation. Only very few freestanding tents are on the market, let alone with a more acceptable price.

The flysheet has three ventilationflaps that can be opened by velcrostraps. It is no problem to pack the tent whil the flaps are still open.

Only thing I ran into was that the tent is just not exactly symmetrical. One side is some cms more high which makes it more easy to sit upright. But it also makes it very difficult to judge how to hang the innertent in the flysheet. However, this is only an one-time exercise* since this is an all-in-one construction. Which means the complete combination of flysheet plus innertent can be erected and uninstalled as one assembly.

This is a plus if it is raining (fast setup and a so dry innertent) and a con if the total tent got wet somehow, ie by condens (the innertent gets wet also when (after) packing). After a first wrong guess*, caused by Murphy* who obviously accompanied me, all was oké and I was very pleased with the result. * Cycling with 50kgs of luggage 🖱️ makes you way to slow to get rid of him !

Drawback of an all-in-one construction is that you can not only use the innertent. Doing so is in principal an advantage in very warm or even hot countries. Besides that, not using the flysheet protects it from the destroying power of the radiations of Sun 🖱️. Which however is only an advantage on days you are stationary. Most cyclists are not, but I am a lot ... I need a new tent every two seasons since the flysheet then falls apart bacause of those powers. It then rips just because you touch it (!)

The poles seem to be of a good (enough) quality. The two that are equal are for the main setup and the one with the red piece in the middle is to expand the vestibules. The tunnel for this one is clearly marked red on top of the flysheet.

April 2024 I continued my YesTrip.nl and cycled from Navas del Selpillar to Puente Genil 🖱️ where I once more wildcamped in an oliveyard (where else ...) for several nights and days. I was still very content with this tent in terms of quality and comfort and ease of use. Also the olivegreen color seemed more helpfull then ever to not get spotted.

This tent is thruly freestanding, so including it's vestibules. It seems to be a new hype to call every tent freestanding but fact is that by far most are not. Then Freestanding means Fully freestanding, not just the innertent. Which is a ridiculous way of specifying since almost all innertents are freestanding. Only pyramid- and A-tents are not, by there design. So hardly any complete full tents are Freestanding.

Verdict early 2024

Recommended ! I have not found any cons yet. Remark : a groundsheet is optional, and the one at these pictures is not an original one. It accompanied and accompanies all my tents up to date. Tip : using an additional groundsheet is the best tip when using a tent.
